Counselling and Psychotherapy
The terms counselling and psychotherapy tend to be used interchangeably by professionals. There is currently no formal definition of either term.
Within the counselling and psychotherapy professions there are many views on the differences between counselling and psychotherapy.
A traditional view is that counselling is usually shorter term and goes into less depth - the focus generally being on the here and now which helps resolve problems without necessarily exploring the causes, whereas psychotherapy is usually longer term, more in depth and the past is usually explored - this helps with more fundamental and long-term change.
My training is in counselling and psychotherapy - two years in Transactional Analysis Counselling, and two years in Integrative Psychotherapy.
